But What About the Money? How Much You Should Bring!

So, you've heard Japan is an expensive place. Well, it is! However, our salary is more than enough to compensate for the cost of living here. In fact, our salary is above the standard JET program pay level.

Unfortunately, though, the money does not start flowing right away. Your first paycheck will arrive on or around August 18. You need to bring some start-up money with you to tide you over until your first payday. Your start-up money is probably best transported by travelers' checks, which are safe, relatively convenient, and offer a slightly better rate than cash.

Now how much should you bring? As much as possible. Most Nagoya JETs agree that you should bring from ¥150,000 to ¥400,000 to cover start-up expenses. Are you still with us? Breathe. Yes, this sounds like a lot of money, especially after all the money you have shelled out preparing to come here, but don't worry too much. The amount you need really depends on you. With the high-end figure mentioned above, you should be able to cover almost all of your start-up expenses (apartment, phone line, appliances, a bicycle, etc.), and still have some "play money" left-over. With the low-end figure mentioned above, you'll get by — you just might need to wait a little longer for that lava lamp or Playstation you've been craving.

Also, since you'll be staying with a host family after arriving in Nagoya, most of your "daily living" expenses during the first few weeks will be covered. If you really have a problem, some 2nd or 3rd year JETs can lend you some cash. We've all been there before.

Bottom line: The more cash you can bring, the faster and easier your transition to Japanese life will be.
